I signed up for the earlier shift, and although I arrived a little late, the volunteers were just getting started with setting up the tables and booths. After signing in, I helped with making the goodie bags for the kids coming over. When we finished setting up early (at around 8:30 AM or so), there weren’t any participants coming in, so we had to wait at the booths for around an hour. By 10:00 AM, the people started coming in at a staggered rate to pick up their food. I stayed at the goodie bag booth with Gowri, since we were in charge of distributing them. We continued to do this until noon, after which we helped with cleaning everything up. Although my shift technically ended at 10:30, I still wanted to help out, so I stayed an extra two hours to do that.

Nitya Baratam, San Diego Food Bank
Today, I participated in the "San Diego Food Bank" service event. This event was based on helping distribute food to families facing financial hardship during the COVID-19 crisis from the North County Food Bank warehouse. When I first reached the venue, the head volunteer explained the drive-thru process and all of the safety rules and regulations. I, and around 5 other individuals were responsible for placing 1 red bag, 1 box of pasta, 3 sliced bread packs, 3 specialty bread packs, 2 protein bags, 3 tomato packs, 1 potato bag, and lastly 1 bell-pepper bag to the individuals who came to the drive-thru. We were requested to place all of them items in peoples' car trunks once they filled in some paperwork. I was in charge of the bread; others were in charge for the remaining food items. Towards the end, we had to remove all of the tables, chairs and tents to put away for the next day. I enjoyed this service project quite a bit! Not only did I have a great time, I was able to spend time on a great cause. I hope I get the opportunity to take part in many similar service events in the future! :))
